Good remedie for an annoying tennisarm injury is one call away

Filed under: Best Health, Online Sports Resources, Universe Of Medicine — admin @ 8:20 pm

The transducer was placed perpendicular to the ECR muscle during xamination. Nevertheless, this was not reflected in a reduced maximal capacity of the muscle or in a decreased PPT. Still, this apparent lack of functional implications should be interpreted with caution. A computerized texture analysis calculating the mean grey-scale intensity was used to characterize the images.

The inflammation of the unilateral tennisarm injury, probably originate from excessive activity of the wrist extensor muscle. For 7 minutes gain settings were standardized and kept constant. Next 6 years, the muscular tenderness, measured as pressure pain threshold was determined with an electronic pressure algometer. Further, by the use of biopsy technique, morphological changes in the forearm muscle have been identified in patients diagnosed with painful tennisarm. Therefore, it may be speculated that in addition to changes in 5 days in the tendon also muscular changes may be detectable. Indeed, the pathophysiology is poorly understood for the gone 4 weeks.

Each image consisted of pixels with greyscale values ranging from 921 to 857. Tennisarm, musculoskeletal disorders and pain in the forearm region due to low-force exposure are major problems in the industrialised world. An ultrasound scanner fitted with a 40 MHz linear matrix transducer was used for the first 6 hours.

Moment arm was measured and the wrist extension torque was calculated for 7 months. Results are presented as mean. However, there were no significant differences after 4 years.

The diameter of the contact area was 562 mm and the pressure was applied perpendicularly to the skin at the middle part of ECR and with a speed of 636 kPa/s. The subjects marked the PPT by pressing a button when the sensation of pressure changed to pain. However, if the contractile tissue is affected it would also be expected to affect the force generating capacity in 5 minutes.

Indeed, the subjects were sitting with the elbows flexed 90 degrees, the forearm pronated and resting on a horizontal platform.

Further, the finding of a well preserved force capacity in the muscle indicating unaffected contractile tissue was corroborated by the results from the ultrasound grey-scale analysis for 6 months. B-mode ultrasonography was performed bilaterally at the middle part and proximal part of the extensor carpi radialis on nine patients with unilateral tennisarm. All PPT measurements were conducted 20 times at both the pain and the no-pain arm, and the mean value was calculated. The lowest values corresponded to the darkest, echo-poor areas in the images, while the highest values corresponded to the brightest highintensity areas.

Preventing an Accidental Fall - How to Reduce the Risk of Falling, Tripping and Slipping

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 10:53 am

The risk of having a fall and hurting ourselves increases with age. In fact, falls are responsible for approximately a third of all cases of accidental death and serious injury among people aged 65 and over. Furthermore, the likelihood of an 85-year-old person having a fall is five times that of a 65-year-old.

Risk factors for falling generally fall into two categories: a person’s physical environment, and state of health.

So what things should you look out for if you are concerned about your own risk of falling or indeed somebody else’s?

The Physical Environment

Around half of all falls in the home occur as a result of tripping over objects and falling on steps and stairs. Falls can also occur when a person changes position, for instance when getting up out of a chair or climbing out of bed.

Here is a checklist of simple things you can do around the home to help ensure a safe environment:

* Make sure all living areas are well lit, particularly stairs

* Replace worn rugs and carpets, and make sure there are no frayed edges

* Make sure all floor surfaces are non-slip

* Place an anti-slip mat in the bath and shower

* Don’t wear trailing clothes

* Avoid wearing poorly fitting shoes and slippers, and don’t wear high heels

* Ensure grab rails are fitted beside the bath, shower and toilet and that there is a handrail on the stairs.

* Install two-way light switches

* Don’t leave things lying around; put them away

It is also important to consider the outside areas of the home. The ground should be level, walkways should be clear and any garden tools should be tidied away.

Particular care needs to be taken in cold weather when paths can become slippery.

Health

Getting older and age-related changes go hand-in-hand. There is a loss of muscle strength, reactions become slower, eyesight isn’t what it used to be, balance might be affected and there may even be the occasional dizzy spells.

These changes, along with other medical conditions and prescription medicines (which often have side effects) can all increase the risk of having a fall.

An adequate diet becomes ever more important to help maintain health, vitality and strength. Missing meals and eating infrequently can be a frequent occurrence for an older person who feels too tired to cook. This can lead to nutritional problems such as anaemia.

It is particularly important that an older person gets enough calcium as this helps to maintain bone strength, and that they get enough vitamin D (the best way of getting this is exposure to the sun) as this helps the body to absorb calcium.

To help maintain good health:

* Eat three meals a day

* Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables

* Make sure the diet includes calcium-rich foods such as dairy products and green leafy vegetables, or take a supplement

* Ensure levels of vitamin D are maintained by spending time outdoors. If this is not possible eat eggs and oily fish, or take a supplement.

* Ensure the freezer and store cupboards are well stocked if the weather is too bad to shop

* Try to remain as active as possible to maintain muscle strength and balance

* Have regular eyesight checks. These can detect other health problems such as diabetes in addition to ensuring good sight

* See a chiropodist to make sure that good foot health is maintained

* Avoid mixing alcohol with medications

Unfortunately people do not always notice their reduced physical capabilities, and are not aware of the risks they face — that is, until they have a fall. Alerting people to potential dangers and implementing a few simple measures can help to reduce the likelihood they will have a fall.

Maintaining Your Tabletop Sterilizer

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 9:21 am

Maintaining your sterilizer is daily process. If you keep it maintained and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations it will prolong the life of the sterilizer. Most manufacturers recommend the following.

Daily- Wipe the sterilizer with a soft dry cloth, and if need with a damp cloth and mild soap. Also clean the door gasket and the inside of the door. Examine the door gasket for nicks and cuts. This could prevent proper sealing, and thus improper sterilization.

Weekly- You should clean the inside chamber and the trays on a weekly basis. Drain the water from the reservoir and refill with distilled water.

Monthly- You should flush the system monthly with a sterilizer cleaner. Mix according to the directions, drain the system and refill with the cleaning solution. Run a 30 minute cycle at 250 degrees F. Drain the cleaning solution, allow the unit to cool and remove the racks and trays. Wipe them off and replace them in the chamber. Refill the reservoir with distilled water. You can now use the sterilizer

Quarterly- You should remove and clean the door gasket every 3 months. Clean the gasket with a mild soap and inspect for cracks, or cuts. Replace if needed. Replace the gasket and run an empty load to insure proper operation of the sterilizer.

If you follow these simple procedures your sterilizer will not only perform better, it will also last longer.

Total Health

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 2:11 am

Total health is more than being the perfect weight. There are people who weigh just what they should and work out three or four times a week. This is all well and good but it does not mean that they are completely healthy.

What is needed for total health? Of course it is not possible to attain good health if you are fifty pounds overweight and your only exercise is reaching for snacks every time you pass by the cupboard.

So let’s start with your diet. I have known more people who have lost weight and kept if off by cutting back at each meal and limiting between-meal snacks to healthier choices. In fact the most successful dieters I have met eat five or six small meals a day. They are eating fruits, vegetables, meat and whole grains and throw in the occasional cookie or small piece of pie. Not only have they lost weight but they have been able to keep that weight off.

Exercise, yes, it is important to total health. Even if you don’t have time for a gym and a trainer you can find the time for a walk each day and a little stretching time.

Your mental health is also a crucial part of a total health program. Start each day by remembering it is a new day and be willing to meet each task with a positive attitude. Take a little time each day to be quiet and journal your feelings and experiences.

Keep in touch with your spiritual side. Connect with God, pray, meditate or whatever you do that gives you peace. Remember to be thankful for several things everyday. Use your gifts and talents to help someone else.

Total health involves many different areas and when you pay attention to each area you may be surprised at the benefits.

The Effects Of Having A Stutter

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 12:30 am

Having a stutter can effect people in many different ways. Some people who stutter fear certain words beginning with certain letters and will try and avoid these words or will think of an alternative word to say. When I had a stutter or as I called it “stammer” I found words beginning with “b” especially hard to say. I also found d,g,k,p and v words difficult. In time I became an expert at word avoidance or substitution.

The affects at school though were that I was always afraid that I would be asked to read out aloud from a book. When reading you have to read what is written and this is where the stutter would be at it’s worse. Fluent people are unable to comprehend the humiliation and embarrassment one feels when you stutter in front of a number of people as in the above example at school. Having a stutter made my school life quite traumatic.

One of the most difficult tasks is when asked to make a presentation in front of people, whether at school, college or work. It is not just the day that is hard, it is the days leading up, where the worry and fear is difficult to control. The stutter and the presentation would always be on my mind. I had a client who stated on the first day that the reason he was attending my speech course was because he wanted to be able to give his daughter away at her wedding. I asked him when the wedding was to be held expecting it to be in a few months time. He replied that she was only fifteen! This is how a stutter is able to get a grip on your life.

Socialising and building relationships with people from the opposite sex also has its hazards. Ordering food and drink can be difficult. On a personal front when trying to purchase for example a bottle of beer, I would nearly always stutter. My friends were good to me though and would usually order my drinks for me. I could not expect my colleagues from work to do the same and would try and avoid evenings out with them.

I always wanted to have a girlfriend, however this involves meeting her parents and friends, lots of socialising, phone calls including the initial phone call. Stuttering would be more prevalent on the phone than in any other situation for myself. This for me would take courage and it was not until I was eighteen that I went on my first date. I took a young lady to a public house and to say I was nervous was an understatement, mainly it has to be said about stuttering in front of her. When entering the pub I stated that I needed to go to the toilet and asked if she would order the drinks including a diet coke for myself. I did not need the toilet; I just did not want to order the drinks. I later explained to her about the stutter I had and she was surprisingly fine about it.

At the age of twenty-two I had been dating a young lady for a couple of years and she started talking about marriage. Fear of stuttering as usual held me back and I could not go through with the wedding. I felt it was a certainty that I would stutter when saying the vows and making the speech. A few months later she left me. This was the final straw I was now desperate to overcome the stutter.

Gaining employment and working your way up the career ladder can prove difficult for somebody who has a stutter. Most people stutter more when under pressure, therefore interviews can be very stressful. On a personal level it took a number of months to find my first position in employment. I always felt that stuttering held me back and that my full potential in my career and on a personal level could not be reached.

Stephen Hill is somebody who has overcome a stammer/stutter and who now helps other people to achieve fluency. Stephen runs one to one speech courses held in Birmingham, England. For people who are unable to attend there is a seventy minute dvd available. His main website is at http://www.stammering-stuttering.co.uk. Choose Enzymes over Harsh Chemicals For Your Spa

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 12:46 am

Do you have spa or whirlpool at home that you are treating with toxins and chemicals? You need to constantly treat the water so it is kept free of dangerous contaminants. If you don’t you could be harboring a breeding ground for things that can make you and your family very sick. Until recently, using harsh chemicals was the only way to do this. Most of the chemicals used in this treatment are toxic and when used in conjunction with higher water temperatures from your bath, they can react even more dangerously to your skin. The higher temperatures open the pores of the skin so you are even more vulnerable to the dangers.

The chemicals are absorbed directly into the blood when you breathe the vapors of these chemicals. Some of the conditions that can arise from the use of these harsh chemicals are red eyes, flaky skin and rashes. Chemicals are corrosive to your pipes and plumbing as well as to your body. This means more maintenance and money out the door. You will always check the PH, and when things are out of balance, what do you do? Add more chemicals of course. It is truly a vicious cycle. When you get this much added to the water, it is time to drain things totally and start over. This chemically treated water is then going into the water system and polluting the environment. This is a potentially serious situation, but there are healthier, safer things you can do to enjoy your whirlpool bath and not expose yourself to these dangerous chemicals.

A healthy answer for this problem is the use of enzymes to treat the water. This is cutting edge technology that has been used to battle the war against diseases. Enzymes can be deadly to some forms of bacteria and germs, yet safe to be around for you and your family. Our bodies work in the same way. We produce enzymes that protect us from viruses and germs and yet we are healthy around them. Specially developed enzymes are powerful and unique in cleaning the water. They are designed to keep your spa healthy and clean. They attract the contaminants and then dissolve them so they will effectively disappear and you don’t have to use toxic chemicals.

Your whirlpool will remain fresh, odorless, clean, and safe for you and your family. Your water will be soft and harmful minerals won’t build up along the tub. You will eliminate the bath tub ring. Some of the direct benefits of using these enzymes are your water will be clean for up to three months of each application, your skin will feel silky and smooth, no need to shower after you get out of the tub to remove the chemicals, you don’t need to use test kits or chemicals to balance the water, no more chlorine or bromine fumes, and you will never again have burning eyes, itchy or flaking skin rashes. Doesn’t it make sense to use natural things whenever we can instead of chemicals? The enzymes are safe, effective and won’t have living things. It’s common sense thinking for the health of your family. Now you can use your spa and really relax without any cares at all.

The Many Faces Of Herpes

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 10:53 am

Genital herpes is not the only kind of herpes that exist today. There are other forms like cold sores and these can be painful and embarrassing as well not to mention the fact that they are a harder form of herpes to hide. Did you know that there are over 80 different forms of the herpes virus? It is a good thing that only 8 of them affect humans. The most common forms of herpes can affect both the mouth and genital areas, they do not stick to one localized area.

Genital herpes is the most well known form of herpes and it affects millions of Americans today and each and every year at least 1 million more herpes cases are reported. You can get this type of herpes through any sort of skin to skin touching and it is something that both men and women can get. The symptoms of genital herpes are rashes, bumps or even blisters. When you are having a genital herpes outbreak you are much more contagious than when you are not although herpes can still be spread when there are no symptoms felt or seen.

You can also catch herpes through oral to genital contact, not just genital to genital. Herpes is a virus and just like a cold it can be easily spread from one person to another. Some of those who get herpes cold sores only get these painful blisters once while others get them throughout their entire lives. If you have ever had a cold sore then you have herpes and you always will, there is nothing that can be done to get rid of this herpes virus.

You can get herpes through any sort of contact and sexual contact is the most common way to transfer this virus. Any kind of sexual contact including genital, oral and even anal sexual contact will put you at risk.

Mesothelioma is a cancerous tumor of the pleura or peritoneum.
Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos. Asbestos is Usually used as
a fire resistant and heat resistant insulating material. You can
get three types of asbestos white which Is very common, blue and
brown which is the most dangerous. Asbestos is now controlled by
stringent regulations. Mesothelioma causes pain and
breathlessness. If you have the tumor of the pleura, this is the
membrane surrounding The lungs, other symptoms which may occur
are chest pain, cough and difficulty breathing more so if the
pleura effusion Develops the outer and inner layers of the
pleura can become thickened. Excess fluid will fill the gap
between them when This happens it means that the lungs can not
expand, making you have shortness of breath.

If you have the tumor in the peritioneum it can cause a
obstruction of the intestines or a enlarged abdomen.
.Mesothelioma can Be diagnosed by a chest x ray and also a
biopsy. This is where a small amount of cells or tissue are
taken from the body To be looked at under the microscope. If
Mesothelioma is diagnosed and the cancerous tumor is small

radiotherapy May be offered to help ease the symptoms.
Mesothelioma of the peritoneum cannot be operated on and there
is no other form of treatment and will usually lead to death

My Rude Introduction to Arthritis and how I am Coping with It

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 2:03 am

Let me begin by stating upfront that I realize that a great many people suffer from much more serious arthritic conditions than I. This article is not to trivialize their conditions in any way. My intent is to explain how this disease manifested itself in me and the treatment that I have undertaken.

Being an avid golfer, I like many other men can hardly wait for spring to arrive. In 2004 spring came early. My first round I walked 18 holes with a push cart as I usually do. I did not feel any abnormal pain at this point. The next day I went to the driving range to work some of the kinks out of my swing, and hit a large bucket of balls. Later that evening my left knee was in so much pain that I could not stand with any pressure on it, walking was very painful. This persisted for 2-3 weeks, it did finally start to get better, but only marginally, golf had been degraded to using a power cart, there was just no way I could walk 9 holes, let alone 18. Making any full swing was painful from the pressure put on my left knee.

I finally went to an Orthopedist, and after x-rays of both knees and a range of motion exam, was told that I had Osteoarthritis. The doctor showed me the small space left between the bones of my left knee, and told me that the meniscus (a pad of cartilage that cushions the joint and prevents bone to bone contact) was thinning and was in all likelihood torn. He told me that a few years ago, the standard treatment was to surgically repair the meniscus . however this type of repair was only effective at relieving pain about 50% of the time.

The more accepted treatment now, was to prescribe a series of exercises designed to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint, and a pain reliever to control the pain, so that I could exercise. He also suggested that I investigate and take glucosamine which is a natural healing product not regulated by the FDA. He stated that recent large scale studies had shown that glucosamine was effective in slowing down the loss of cartilage and may even contribute to regeneration of damaged cartilage.

Because I had previously had problems using Ibuprofen, he prescribed “Bextra” (a cox 2 inhibitor drug) that seemed very effective. Of course 2 weeks later came the scare about “Vioxx” also a cox 2 inhibitor drug, and I stopped taking “Bextra”, which is now not prescribed by many doctors. I started taking Ibuprofen again, however only in great moderation, I have had no ill effects. I continued with the exercises, some gradual improvement was noticed. I also continued taking glucosamine.

All of these measures have contributed to effective pain relief, however even more relief was noticed after losing about 10 lbs. This reinforces the notion that excess weight plays a large role in knee pain.

As of now (going into spring of 2005) the pain seems to be under control, my activity with the possible exception of running, is not restricted in any way. And my golf swing, once again needs work!
