Botulinum medicine (abbreviated to B.tox) has become trendy in Sydney society and now it has become an important part of grooming for many in the city.
But I am often amazed when I hear the misguided myths in connection with this painless procedure. I have outlined below some of the myths which I come across frequently at Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I practise as a doctor.
Delusion no. 1: B.tox may freeze my expressions!
There are approximately 60 muscles in the human face. Their extensive use may result in the formation of wrinkles. Too many treatments of B.tox have the effect of the muscles of the face becoming over relaxed. The quantity used by almost all physicians make you appear ‘refreshed’, but still you will keep your natural expression.
So a carefully calculated dosage of B.tox in the proper place means facial expression is kept whilst any wrinkles are minimised.
Delusion no. 2: B.tox is a deadly poison!
This to some extent is correct. Botulinum Toxin Type A is the correct medical terminology. In very large doses it may result in loss of muscle tone and can even make you really ill.
However to help keep matters in perspective - an old pharmacist’s saying is that ‘everything is poisonous - it all depends on the dose’. All medications might make a person unwell in large enough doses. Water can kill you if you drink too much.
Delusion no. 3: Wrinkle injections will be painful!
The hypodermic needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine have a diameter less than your hair. Many people state that the injections aren’t worse than a mosquito bite. It is unquestionably less sore than a procedure like a blood profile.
Delusion no. 4: I will lose feeling in my face!
Completely false. B.tox affects the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, and not on sensate nerves. Only the ability to relax your muscles is impacted by B.tox.
Delusion no. 5. Once you begin getting B.tox you must keep it up or the lines become even worse!
This is also false.
You can expect the treatment to be effective for upwards of 3 months. Any treatments after the initial visit should last a little longer. Eventually as muscle strength returns, the wrinkles will reappear bit by bit. However they will certainly be no more noticeable than before.
In fact any lines will generally be softer than if you hadn’t had B.tox - even should you don’t continue the therapy. This is chiefly the case due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a ‘wrinkle holiday’ when the treatment was effective.
