Preventing an Accidental Fall - How to Reduce the Risk of Falling, Tripping and Slipping

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 10:53 am

The risk of having a fall and hurting ourselves increases with age. In fact, falls are responsible for approximately a third of all cases of accidental death and serious injury among people aged 65 and over. Furthermore, the likelihood of an 85-year-old person having a fall is five times that of a 65-year-old.

Risk factors for falling generally fall into two categories: a person’s physical environment, and state of health.

So what things should you look out for if you are concerned about your own risk of falling or indeed somebody else’s?

The Physical Environment

Around half of all falls in the home occur as a result of tripping over objects and falling on steps and stairs. Falls can also occur when a person changes position, for instance when getting up out of a chair or climbing out of bed.

Here is a checklist of simple things you can do around the home to help ensure a safe environment:

* Make sure all living areas are well lit, particularly stairs

* Replace worn rugs and carpets, and make sure there are no frayed edges

* Make sure all floor surfaces are non-slip

* Place an anti-slip mat in the bath and shower

* Don’t wear trailing clothes

* Avoid wearing poorly fitting shoes and slippers, and don’t wear high heels

* Ensure grab rails are fitted beside the bath, shower and toilet and that there is a handrail on the stairs.

* Install two-way light switches

* Don’t leave things lying around; put them away

It is also important to consider the outside areas of the home. The ground should be level, walkways should be clear and any garden tools should be tidied away.

Particular care needs to be taken in cold weather when paths can become slippery.

Health

Getting older and age-related changes go hand-in-hand. There is a loss of muscle strength, reactions become slower, eyesight isn’t what it used to be, balance might be affected and there may even be the occasional dizzy spells.

These changes, along with other medical conditions and prescription medicines (which often have side effects) can all increase the risk of having a fall.

An adequate diet becomes ever more important to help maintain health, vitality and strength. Missing meals and eating infrequently can be a frequent occurrence for an older person who feels too tired to cook. This can lead to nutritional problems such as anaemia.

It is particularly important that an older person gets enough calcium as this helps to maintain bone strength, and that they get enough vitamin D (the best way of getting this is exposure to the sun) as this helps the body to absorb calcium.

To help maintain good health:

* Eat three meals a day

* Eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables

* Make sure the diet includes calcium-rich foods such as dairy products and green leafy vegetables, or take a supplement

* Ensure levels of vitamin D are maintained by spending time outdoors. If this is not possible eat eggs and oily fish, or take a supplement.

* Ensure the freezer and store cupboards are well stocked if the weather is too bad to shop

* Try to remain as active as possible to maintain muscle strength and balance

* Have regular eyesight checks. These can detect other health problems such as diabetes in addition to ensuring good sight

* See a chiropodist to make sure that good foot health is maintained

* Avoid mixing alcohol with medications

Unfortunately people do not always notice their reduced physical capabilities, and are not aware of the risks they face — that is, until they have a fall. Alerting people to potential dangers and implementing a few simple measures can help to reduce the likelihood they will have a fall.

Maintaining Your Tabletop Sterilizer

Filed under: Best Health — admin @ 9:21 am

Maintaining your sterilizer is daily process. If you keep it maintained and follow the manufacturer’s recommendations it will prolong the life of the sterilizer. Most manufacturers recommend the following.

Daily- Wipe the sterilizer with a soft dry cloth, and if need with a damp cloth and mild soap. Also clean the door gasket and the inside of the door. Examine the door gasket for nicks and cuts. This could prevent proper sealing, and thus improper sterilization.

Weekly- You should clean the inside chamber and the trays on a weekly basis. Drain the water from the reservoir and refill with distilled water.

Monthly- You should flush the system monthly with a sterilizer cleaner. Mix according to the directions, drain the system and refill with the cleaning solution. Run a 30 minute cycle at 250 degrees F. Drain the cleaning solution, allow the unit to cool and remove the racks and trays. Wipe them off and replace them in the chamber. Refill the reservoir with distilled water. You can now use the sterilizer

Quarterly- You should remove and clean the door gasket every 3 months. Clean the gasket with a mild soap and inspect for cracks, or cuts. Replace if needed. Replace the gasket and run an empty load to insure proper operation of the sterilizer.

If you follow these simple procedures your sterilizer will not only perform better, it will also last longer.

Success Is In Your Hands - For Things To Change, I Must Change First!

Filed under: Beauts + Beauty — admin @ 11:19 pm

Do you know that many people feel they cannot achieve what they want in life because they are not in control of their circumstances? Is it really so?

How many times have you heard this: “If only I had creativity like him, I would be able to develop innovative Internet Marketing products,” or “if only I had the money to start the e-commerce business, then I would be able to set up a business”? Do you know that all these things are within our control the moment we change ourselves?

It sounds unbelievable but it’s true! This requires a shift in your paradigm of thinking and it moves you from a powerless state to a state where you can actually take control. We will now take a look at 3 ordinary people like you and me who are able to achieve what they want in life through this simple principle.

David was a guy in his late 30s who was still actively looking for a partner to settle down. When I ask him why he had not settled down, he replied that he was still looking for his ideal partner. His idea of an ideal partner is a beautiful, smart, elegant and well-mannered lady. I started to ask him, “Would this ideal partner want to take you as her partner?” Immediately, he gets the idea. As David had messy hair, liked to drink and smoke, he realized that his ideal partner would never be attracted to somebody like him. He started to make an effort to comb his hair neatly and kicked his drinking and smoking habits. In a couple of months down the road, he finally found the ideal partner that he was looking for.

Mark was in the Internet Marketing business. He was not getting the sales result that he wanted to achieve. After attending a teleconference call by one of the Internet Marketing gurus, he realized the reason why he was not achieving the sales result he wanted was due to lack of planning and insufficient market research for his product. Mark evaluated his methods and began to make a conscious effort to change the way he works. He started to plan well and do sufficient market research before launching his product. The next product that he released was a runaway success!

Ken was a new teacher. He was allocated to teach the most mischievous class in the whole school. Many teachers in the school had already given up on this class. Initially, Ken tried the usual approach to teach the class, but it didn’t work well. Ken started evaluating his method and decided to change his approach of teaching them. Instead of the usual one-way communication to the student, Ken engaged the students in the class through fun interactions and games. When the exam results was out, the class had dramatically improved their result.

Based on the above stories, we saw that in order to change the situation, the first change must come from within ourselves. Very often, we feel powerless to change our situation when we feel that things are not within our control. Through this simple principle of changing ourselves in order to change things, we have the power to take control rather than being a victim of the circumstances. When we take responsibility for what we get and change ourselves, everything and everybody will change with us! For things to change, I must change…FIRST!

So…

If you want to be the top Internet Marketer, work hard and work smart.

If you want to be the best employee, constantly value-add to the company.

If you want to find the perfect girlfriend, be that perfect boyfriend first.

Take a piece of paper and write down the top 5 things that you want to change and list down the 5 changes that you would take in order to change the situation. If you do not know what the problem is, kindly seek the help of a friend or loved one who can point it out to you. Start changing your life today!

Stress Management - Give Up The Fight!

Filed under: Misc Infos — admin @ 7:04 pm

STOP NOW! That’s right, where you are right now, in front of the screen. You can take this opportunity to choose, for the next 3 minutes or so, to be a human ‘being’ instead of a human ‘doing’. Just let yourself ‘be’.

How good are you at noticing when ’stress’ has taken its hold on you? Your mind and body are extremely good at giving you messages to say “It’s all getting too much, something needs to change.” When we ignore those messages, what happens? They get louder, and LOUDER! The messages comes in the guise of headaches, digestive problems, bad temper, aches, pains, depression and anxiety and the list goes on and on.

Close your eyes now, inhale deeply and exhale slowly through parted lips and then just ‘listen’ to your mind and body. This may seem a little odd to you at first, but I promise it is worth it. Just carry on.

  • What kind of thoughts are going on in your mind?

  • Do you find it possible to just ’still’ your mind and let go of your thoughts, so that you can think of absolutely nothing?

  • How does your body feel right now? Spend a good few moments just seeing how your body reacts to you tuning in to it. What are you noticing, seeing, hearing and feeling?

Tune in to your jaw.
Inhale deeply and as you exhale repeat slowly to yourself: ‘It’s OK to relax my jaw now.’

Tune in to your neck and shoulders.
Inhale deeply and as you exhale repeat slowly to yourself: ‘It’s OK to relax my neck and shoulders now.’

Tune in to your back.
Inhale deeply and as you exhale repeat slowly to yourself: ‘It’s OK to relax my back now.’

Now notice your breathing. Put one hand on your chest and the other on your abdomen. Which one is moving the most? Begin to allow the lower hand to move forward as you inhale and backwards as you exhale.

Well done! So now you are getting to be more in tune with your mind and body and have already learnt some simple ways to ‘let go’.

Tools like the simple exercise above are invaluable when it comes to handling stress. Most Stress Management programmes look at ‘combating’ stress. This approach has never appealed to me because it sounds like one big fight. That actually would make me feel more stressed. And there is a much easier way, I can assure you.

Give Up The ‘Fight’!

Instead of fighting stress, clients on my Stress Management programme move into the field of ‘acceptance’. I teach quick and simple techniques that allow you to noticeably release tension in your mind and body in just a few seconds.

This is how it works… clients are encouraged to play with a whole tool box of techniques. They pick out the ones which they feel work best for them so creating a bank of resources to suit any ’stressful’ situation. Whether in the workplace, at home or out and about, they are now equipped with a choice of simple tools which they can use easily and effectively, whenever they feel symptoms of stress. Here’s how one lady describes the process,

“I began to tune in to a lightness in my body, my feelings of overwhelm started to recede, I was able to see what was really important to me and then I could more easily find ways through my problems. I have been practising the technique whenever I feel as though life is getting out of control again. People close to me have noticed how I am more laid back. Most importantly I am no longer suffering with the depression and anxiety which was beginning to really disable me.”

To find out how much stress you are under, take my free online Stress Assessment at www.BerylWhiting.com/stress.htm and then instead of ‘combating’ it, learn how to ‘handle’ it. Your body will thank you for it.

Media What? How to Create a Media Kit

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 7:58 am

So you’ve been in business now for a few months (maybe even years) and your small business is blossoming. Then one day a potential client or advertiser asks for one of your Media Kits. Media Kit? Uhhh… sure, I’ll get that to you a.s.a.p. Only to end up frantically searching the net at 2am for any idea of what the heck is supposed to be in your “Media Kit”.

A Media Kit, also called a press packet, is simply a collection of information that typically includes a letter to the recipient, brochures, testimonials, reviews and a business card. A media kit is a sampling of key information about you and your company, what you do and why they should care.

A media kit is purely information and should always be prepared ahead of time! You never know when you will meet a prospective client or advertiser and having a professional media kit to put in their hands on the spot will insure they remember your business.

Your media kit doesn’t have to be expensive, fancy or elaborate but it does need to portray a clean, crisp and professional image. First impressions count, especially in business. A basic media kit should include, at the very least, a well written proofread cover letter, a brochure, a press release, business cards and information about your companies history and your mission.

Your media kit should be housed in a high quality, professional presentation folder which can be found at your local office supply chain. Folders with diecuts for a business card are ideal for media kits. A simple label with your company information or logo can be applied to the front to further personalize your media kit.

If you have a newsletter or if you have written articles relevant to your business you may want to include those as well. Other optional inclusions could include a listing of your products, calendar of upcoming events, professional black and white photographs or an invitation to your next event.

Last but not least - Follow Up. Follow up calls can be made 3-4 days after the media kit has been mailed out. If possible make sure all media and advertising contacts receive an updated media kit each quarter with new articles, press releases and information of course.

Cisco Routing For The CCNA And CCNP: Administrative Distance

Filed under: Technology — admin @ 7:08 pm

The textbook definition of “administrative distance” is simple enough: “the measurement of a protocol’s believability”. It’s not enough to know the definition, however you’ve got to know when AD comes into the picture and when it does not.

When a packet needs to be routed, the router looks in its routing table for the next-hop IP address the packet should take to get to the destination. There may be more than one matching path, in which case the router will look for the “longest match”. The route that has the longest match - the route with the most bits in the mask set to “1″ - will be the route that is used.

Consider the following three routes from a fictional Cisco router:

I 172.17.0.0 /24 via 172.1.1.1

O 172.17.0.0 /25 via 173.1.1.1

R 172.17.0.0 /26 via 174.1.1.1

This router has three possible next-hop IP addresses that it can send packets destined for the network 172.17.0.0. The masks are of different lengths, meaning that the route with the longest match (again, the route with the most bits set to “1″) will be used. In this example, the RIP route will be used, since it has the longest match with a mask of /26. The administrative distances do not matter.

AD does matter when the masks are the same length, as shown here:

I 172.17.0.0 /24 via 172.1.1.1

O 172.17.0.0 /24 via 173.1.1.1

R 172.17.0.0 /24 via 174.1.1.1

The longest match rule always precedes the use of AD, but here there is a three-way tie regarding the masks. They’re all /24 (or 255.255.255.0 in dotted decimal). AD will be used to break this tie.

As mentioned, AD is a measurement of a protocol’s believability. It is important to keep in mind that the lowest AD will be preferred. And while the routing table will show you the ADs of the respective protocols, it’s a very good idea to know these ADs before taking the CCNA or CCNP:

Connected route: 0

Static Route: 1

EIGRP Summary: 5

External BGP: 20

EIGRP (Internal): 90

IGRP: 100

OSPF: 110

ISIS : 115

RIP: 120

EIGRP (External) : 170

Unknown: 255 (A router will not believe a source with an AD of 255, and such routes will not be placed into the routing table.)

The three protocols we looked at in the comparison were RIP, IGRP, and OSPF. While your first instinct may be that the OSPF route would be the most believable, IGRP actually has a lower AD than the other two and would be the route installed in the routing table.

Since IGRP does not support variable-length subnet masking and OSPF does, you may never see this scenario outside of an exam question. But if you do see it in the exam room or in a production network, you’ll understand how an IGRP route could be preferred over an OSPF route.
